W&W Redefine Trance at Exchange LA

What does it say when presale tickets sold for an up-and-coming duo beat out the amount sold by the likes of Skrillex, Armin van Buuren, and Morgan Page?

It tells you there’s an important wave of music for the EDM world with a fresh direction for electronic music to explore and thrive.

That direction is W&W.

If the ticket sales weren’t enough, the Trance icon Armin van Buuren says, “W&W are truly the rising stars of Trance. If I have to put my money on somebody, I put it on W&W.” The Dutch duo known as W&W consist of Willem van Hanegem and Wardt van der Harst and have dominated Trance stages around the world with their unique genre-bending style. Songs like “Lift Off!” have captivated audiences, twisting the melodic  euphoria of Trance paired with the gritty power of Electro. I knew their style was something new and exciting and, once it was announced that W&W were coming to Exchange in Downtown LA once again, I knew I had to go.

Exchange LA, the art deco-gone-futuristic venue, has teamed up with Insomniac for their Friday and Saturday nights, reinvigorating the relatively under-served Trance scene in Los Angeles. With the creation of ‘Awakening’ Fridays and ‘Inception’ Saturdays, Exchange has made itself the premier place to see your favorite artists.

The energy was palpable once W&W took the stage Friday night with the crowd already beginning to salivate at what was to come. They began their three-hour journey with their masterpiece “Lift Off!” and took a journey through Trance, Progressive House, and even touches of Electro and Moombahcore with Showtek’s “Get Loose”. W&W kept the pace high all night, timing their peaks with songs like “D# Fat” (a W&W collaboration with Armin van Buuren) that had the crowd raving until the early morning. In short, W&W put on a set that perfectly defines the newest style of Trance.

At the risk of gushing too much about my new favorite Trance DJ’s and favorite venue in LA, I’ll leave it at this: If you ever have a chance to go to Exchange LA and see W&W, do not hesitate.
